Is the world ready for 2 Batmen?

Posted by Noah On August - 30 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

The simple answer is no.  No one is ready for 2 Batmen.  Sometimes you ask questions that are  obviously going to be answered no by 99.9% of the population.

  • Do you like getting punched in the face?
  • Are you ready for your prostate exam?
  • Are you going to stick your hand in that fire?

Most people would answer these questions with a resounding ‘NO!’, but I’m sure there is a certain sect out there that would to say yes.  Much in the same way if you asked the question:

Do you want 2 Batmen running around?

You have to ask yourself who thought this was a good idea? Obviously a fair number of people at DC thought so since that’s what was announced today.  I’m sure it will be temporary much like Wonder Woman’s current situation, but I think that the creators honestly hope that one of these things will stick eventually.   I know the medium of comics consists of characters and worlds in a constant state of flux. It’s always been that way, but I can’t help but wonder why nothing is sacred anymore.   I feel it’s inevitable that Ben Parker will be revealed to be the new Vulture and Gwen Stacy’s spirit is actually possessing Norman Osbourn’s body and is seeking revenge against Spider-man for causing her death.  Actually I should probably keep that idea to myself in case I get a Marvel job…

Batman’s new costume

Posted by Noah On August - 11 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Is it just me or are the 90s coming back with a vengeance when it comes to costume choices? First we have Wonder Woman redesigned into a bizarre ensemble and now we have Batman trotting around a Batman and Robin movie costume with a little more color. After Return of Bruce Wayne wraps up Grant Morrison and artist David Finch will be producing a book entitled Batman:The Return. I’d imagine it details the return of Bruce Wayne to the cowl he’s worn pretty consistently over the past 70 years. While I am excited that Bruce is back I was pretty dismayed by the choices they made with his costume.

First off I’ve never been a yellow oval fan. I always thought it was a little out of place. I liked the reasoning that was eventually given, but still.  On top of that it’s embossed.  Why? Finch must have been a huge Schumacher fan.

Then I saw this image.  The gauntlets look directly influenced by Arkham Asylum and I really dug the entire look of the costume in the game. Paired with a no briefs and piped grey body suit they kinda look ridiculous.  Call me crazy, but I think the lack of the blue briefs really accentuates his package. Maybe that’s what they were going for though.

Different artist with a different take. No better though really. Package focus? Check. Yellow embossed Schumacher oval? Check. Lost the Arkham Asylum gloves, but gained glowing eyes though. I can’t decide if that’s a good or bad thing.
I’m happy Bruce is back. Ecstatic really, but I have never understood why comic companies try and reinvent the wheel.  It’s been rolling along fine for years now guys!

The 9 Stupidest Secret Identities

There are many superheroes out there that have brilliant disguises. And then there are the few who just straight don’t give a damn.

Why DC needs a recap page…

Posted by Noah On August - 4 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

One of the best things Marvel has ever done from an editorial standpoint is include a page at the start of each issue giving you a run down for the book as a whole and then telling you what happened in the previous few issues. It’s a joy for someone like me who may not get to the comic shop every month or may drop a book altogether and then decide to pick it back up again.

Take a look at this Thor recap page:

I haven’t been reading Thor regularly as of late, but by reading recap I felt I had a decent grasp on what had happened previous to this issue. I feel as if DC is pretty much saying ‘Hey you need to read a few issues’ in order to actually understand what is going on. I can’t hand a GL issue to a friend post Blackest Night without actually recapping the issue myself. Far less eloquently I am sure.

This is something I whipped up for an example. It’s not perfect by any means, but it would be helpful to a new reader I think.

So I’m a day late, big whoop, wanna fight about it? I would also like to apologize or maybe MARVEL should apologize for a mistake on last week’s pull-list where I said X-men Legacy 238 was coming out. The Marvel website was wrong about that, it actually comes out THIS week. I noticed they did that the week before too, where they were a week off on New Mutants 15… what idiots. Who knows what they’re wrong about this week.

Brightest Day Teaser Image

Posted by Noah On July - 26 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

These teaser images are probably my favorite thing that DC does as far as promotion. Even more so than the rings they were handing out during Blackest Night. I love to pour over these images. So much so that Larry and I even dedicated a podcast to picking apart the Battle for the Cowl one. The Brightest Day image follows the same format as the previous ones by presenting a series of characters and items in various states teasing the coming stories. These are some things I’ve noticed.

In the most recent issue of Brightest Day we’ve seen that Ronnie and Jason are not alone in the Firestorm entity. The Blackest Night Firestorm is still with them or at the very least it’s still with Ronnie. It seems as if Ronnie and Jason are trying to bury the BN Firestorm. What’s interesting though is that Jason is exhibiting fire on the heels of his shoes. Does this possibly mean that once the BN Firestorm is gone that Jason will be the only person with the Firestorm powers?

Mera seems to be reaching out to a dead Aquaman who is clothed in his Blackest Night garb.  It is worth noting that Arthur is wearing his Black Lantern ring.  His rib cage also looks odd. Not sure if that’s artistic or holds some significance.  Mera doesn’t look particularly sad in the image either.

Under the stone on which Aquaman is laid you see two large red eyes peering out which can easily identified as Black Manta.  Is he the cause of Arthur’s death or is this to symbolize he’s always been hiding in the shadows waiting.

Might as well hit the whole family. In this image we can see the new Aqualad who seems to be wielding a hand similar to Aquaman’s one time water hand.  I’ve read rumors about Black Manta actually being his father so he could be the focus of Black Manta’s gaze in the image.  You’ll notice that his legs are submerged in the earth. In previous images that signified they were gonna die.

Deadman in this image appears to be chiseling a tombstone. He looks dead in the image like he usually does, which is at odds with him being alive currently. He is wearing a White Lantern ring though. So maybe the RISE on the stone signifies his own resurrection.

Close by we see a what looks like a shield and what I first thought to be Wonder Woman’s lasso but it actually looks more like a net or a web.  The shield to be looks like something Diana would use which reenforces my feeling these two things are connected to her.

This is probably the image that makes me wonder the most. We see Atrocitus, Ganthet, and Guy either lifting or lowering a casket. The casket is based on earth design so it was probably made by Guy. It appears to have something in it since the GLs are having to brace Atrocitus’ crane.

Could be for this guy. White Lantern Hal appears to be unconcious or dead in a broken White  Lantern. There’s blood coming from his upper arm or shoulder/neck area and it ends up dripping off of his fingers.  I can’t help just make a Christ comparison with this image, which makes me wonder if that was the intent?

I have no idea what’s going on here. The recently revived Jade is being carried by Hawk and Dove. Hawk himself was revived at the same time.  Kinda curious if Jade is dead again or unconscious. I’m betting on unconscious.

Here we see Hawkman and the resurrected Hawkgirl tied to what was shown in a early issue of Brightest Day to be a magical gateway made of all of their past lives bodies. It showed them actually going through the portal though. I wonder if them going through is essentially the same thing as being attached to it and they have subsequently unleashed these Hawkmonsters.

In the foreground we see the shattered remains of the current JSA character Magog’s staff. I wonder if this means he’s been defeated or depowered. Some sort of energy still seems to surround it.

Next to the staff we see a pile of boomerangs.  The original Captain Boomerang was revived at the end of Blackest Night but was recently shown to be able to create energy boomerangs for some reason, which wouldn’t explain this pile. Maybe his son Owen who also goes by the same moniker is responsible and the blood on them could be in reference to his association with the Suicide Squad. The proximity to the Star City sign could mean the Squad is paying a visit to Green Arrow.

Bad things happen when J’onn is cool with fire,  Trial by Fire for an example.  here he seems to be perfectly fine stoking the fire that’s burning at the base of a tree bearing the White Lantern symbol.  Green Arrow also doesn’t seem to like the tree since it is riddled with green arrows.

Across the top of the image you can see the visage of the Antimonitor formed in clouds and from those clouds yellow lightning is streaking:

Which usually signifies the Flash right?  Hmmmm…It really is never good when the Anti-monitor and the Flash have any sort of a connection.  No more Crisis for awhile, OK DC?
